Marantz PM-10S1 Premium Series Flagship Stereo Integrated Amplifier features four switching power amplifier channels in bridged mode (two per channel) for maximum grip and drives.
A dual-mono design, it has separate power supplies for the preamplifier and each of the power amplifier channels, with one transformer dedicated to the preamp to ensure the delicate signals passing through that section of the amplifier aren’t affected by the demands of the high power output stages. There’s also a dedicated supply for the microprocessor controlling volume adjustment, input selection and so on, ensuring no noise from the control section finds its way into the audio path.

To deliver superior performance and high power, each amplifier section is finely optimized, similar to using separate preamp and monoblock amplifiers. Unlike typical amplifiers that use a single transformer for both sections, the PM-10 takes a dual-mono approach. This means the preamp and each power amp channel has its own power supply, with a dedicated transformer for the preamp to ensure signal integrity. The microprocessor responsible for volume and input control also has a dedicated power supply to eliminate any potential noise from affecting the sound quality.

Unlike many modern amplifiers that integrate digital elements, the PM-10 remains purely analog to ensure minimal noise interference. While digital circuitry is common for its convenience, Marantz prioritizes signal purity, handling digital conversion externally in their SA-CD/CD and network players. This approach prevents electrical noise from affecting the analog signals. The PM-10 also includes a "Purest Mode" to deactivate non-essential circuits, optimizing signal flow, and features a Power Amp input for use as a dedicated power amplifier.

With a fully balanced design from input to the power stage, the PM-10 enhances noise rejection and signal strength. Balanced circuits utilize two signal paths—positive and negative—plus an independent ground, reducing external interference. This layout is ideal for high-fidelity performance, minimizing noise and errors. The PM-10 offers both balanced and unbalanced inputs, converting unbalanced signals into balanced to ensure the cleanest possible audio. Combined with an optimized power supply, this architecture delivers exceptional signal purity and noise rejection throughout the amplifier.

The PM-10 combines a fully balanced signal path with bridged power amplification for superior sound quality and control. In a bridged amplifier, each speaker is driven by two amp stages, offering greater precision and power handling. This design allows for more accurate control over speaker movement, improving the clarity and speed of the audio. With 2x200W into 8 ohms and 2x400W into 4 ohms, the PM-10 can drive demanding speakers effortlessly, maintaining clean, distortion-free sound. Marantz’s use of cutting-edge switching amplifiers ensures this high performance in a compact form.

Marantz is known for its commitment to using the best components in its Premium Series products, even going so far as to design and create parts when necessary. This commitment led to the development of the Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module (HDAM). Dissatisfied with the sound quality from standard ‘amplifier on a chip’ integrated circuits, Marantz opted for a miniature amplifier module constructed entirely from discrete components. Extensive listening sessions in dedicated facilities in Europe and Japan guided the optimization of the HDAM. In the PM-10, the advanced HDAM SA3 is utilized, featuring a current feedback topology that accommodates a wide frequency range and dynamic response, perfect for modern high-resolution audio. Custom ultra-fast block capacitors are integrated for rapid response to high current demands. The PM-10’s phono stage also utilizes this design, supporting both moving coil and moving magnet cartridges for optimal LP playback. Marantz has a long-standing commitment to delivering outstanding sound from vinyl, having included high-quality phono stages in its products long before vinyl regained popularity.
Like its companion, the SA-10 SA-CD/CD player/DAC, the PM-10 is built to the utmost standards, featuring a double-layered copper-plated chassis that excels in minimizing both mechanical and electrical interference. Its casework is crafted from thick, heavy, non-magnetic aluminum panels, and both units are supported by aluminum machining feet. The speaker terminals stand out as well; while many leading competitors rely on third-party components or prioritize appearance over performance, the PM-10 utilizes Marantz’s exclusive SPKT-100+ terminals, made from high-purity solid copper. Each design decision for this reference amplifier underscores a fundamental belief: ‘Because Music Matters.’
